Coopers Lane is a very inclusive school and as part of this inclusion we have a Hearing Impaired Unit (HIU). This serves the whole of the borough, catering for children with a severe to profound hearing loss. We follow a ‘Total Communication’ philosophy, this means that we will use any form of communication e.g. British Sign Language (BSL), Signed Support English (SSE) or Speech, as long as it aids the pupils understanding.
The HIU staff all are all trained in BSL along with some of the mainstream teachers who have BSL Level 1. Some Staff are not BSL trained but are deaf aware.
